Performance Management - Advanced

This advanced 3-day [24-hour] course takes a deeper dive into developing the proper skills for effective performance appraisals with an understanding of the related legal and internal agency issues. Students will learn the right way to support positive employee development, while simultaneously understanding the effects upon employees, risk management, liabilities, legal issues, morale, process, and common pitfalls.

This course dives deep into developing the supervisory and management skills needed to properly plan for, prepare, and deliver reliable, lawful, and equitable performance evaluation appraisals to support department morale, employee development, employee wellness and performance.  This advanced course teaches how to minimize risk and liability for giving feedback while maintaining high levels of accountability, respect, efficiency, and teamwork.  Topics of in-depth instruction include:

  • developing meaningful standards of performance and behavior,
  • providing actionable feedback,
  • avoiding common evaluation pitfalls,
  • using evaluations for career development,
  • setting supervisor expectations for delivering evaluations,
  • the in-depth “how to” nuts and bolts of planning, preparation and delivery,
  • appropriate forms and documentation,
  • developing effective performance improvement plans,
  • review and rebuttal processes,
  • relationship to early interventions systems,
  • complications such as medical issues, extended absences, or pending discipline,
  • related laws and legal issues, and
  • effective use of data.

Target Audience

This class is open to all federal, state, tribal, and local First Responder agencies.  All Deputies, Officers, Corrections, FTO’s, Corporals, Supervisors, Command Staff, Executives, non-sworn professional staff, firefighters and EMS are all welcome and encouraged to attend.  

Student Responsibilities

Students are responsible for obtaining permission and approval from their departments prior to registration if the student plans to attend on-duty and have the agency pay for it. You know the rules.  

If you want to attend, we recommend working with your agency prior to registering for a class. If you register for a class, and your department does not approve your time or tuition for any reason, you are still responsible for the terms of the attendance and cancellation policy including any applicable tuition. Again, we know you get it. Course Format
