Modern FTO Liability
The importance of the Field Training Officer cannot be overstated. They mold the next generation and have a huge impact on the development and maintenance of an agency’s culture. FTO programs must get it right.
Description
Modern FTO Liability is designed to instruct Field Training Officers, their supervisors, and their chain of command on current, relevant trends and liability issues in FTO programs. Getting an FTO program right is imperative to an agency’s overall continued success. Agency’s must know how to properly administer an FTO program and how to avoid the common pitfalls other FTO programs experience. Students will gain a strong understanding of:
- What laws and regulations must be followed in an FTO program?
- What FTO policies and procedures must be in place?
- How do I find and administer these policies and best practices?
- What are the common mistakes and pitfalls my agency should avoid?
- Who should be selected as an FTO, …and who shouldn’t?
- How do we ensure that FTO’s are consistently teaching new officers the proper methods and instilling the culture we want at our agency?
- How much training does an officer need to be an FTO?
- How often do FTO’s need update training and how do we ensure they are receiving it?
This course will cover a broad array of contemporary FTO related issues. Many departments experience ongoing systemic issues; do they start with the FTO program? This course will also cover training best practices, many supervisorial liability issues, common use of force issues, cultural issues in public agencies, and modern symbolism issues in today’s law enforcement such as facial hair, tattoos, morale patches, memes, and social media posts.
Course Format
This course is offered in two course formats: "Hosted Classes" where students register individually, and "Contracted Classes" where agencies purchase the entire course at a discounted rate. For scheduling or inquiries, please contact us.
Student Responsibilities
Students are responsible for obtaining permission and approval from their departments prior to registration if the student plans to attend on-duty and have the agency pay for it. You know the rules.
If you want to attend, we recommend working with your agency prior to registering for a class. Because if you register for a class, and your department does not approve your time or tuition for any reason, you are still responsible for the terms of the attendance and cancellation policy including any applicable tuition. Again, we know you get it and we look forward to seeing you in class!
