Performance Management - Basic

Learn how to support positive employee development and performance. The purpose of this 1-day [8-hour] course is to develop basic supervisory skills in preparing & delivering performance appraisals to support positive employee development and performance, develop supervisory skills, and minimize risk to law enforcement agencies.

This course introduces students to the basics of the supervisory and management skills needed to properly prepare and deliver performance evaluations to support positive employee development and performance.  This course covers strategies to minimize risk and liability to law enforcement agencies while maintaining accountability, respect, efficiency, and employee morale.  Topics of instruction include:

  • developing meaningful standards of performance and behavior,
  • providing actionable feedback,
  • avoiding common evaluation pitfalls,
  • overview of planning, preparation and delivery,
  • documentation and record keeping,
  • review and rebuttal processes,
  • addressing common complications such as extended absences or medical issues, and
  • effective use of data.

Course Format

Student Responsibilities

Students are responsible for obtaining permission and approval from their departments prior to registration if the student plans to attend on-duty and have the agency pay for it. You know the rules.  

Target Audience

This class is open to all federal, state, tribal, and local First Responder agencies.  All Deputies, Officers, Corrections, FTO’s, Corporals, Supervisors, Command Staff, Executives, non-sworn professional staff, firefighters and EMS are all welcome and encouraged to attend.
