Officers will learn to critically evaluate AI-assisted reports and articulate them in court.
Description
In today’s evolving law enforcement landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an integral and accepted tool for increasing efficiency while greatly decreasing the traditional time of report writing. AI Report Writing for LE is a 1-day 8-hour course designed to equip peace officers with the knowledge and skills needed to responsibly integrate AI-assisted tools into their report-writing process while maintaining accuracy, integrity, and ethical standards.
Taught by the command officer who recently partnered with the LA County District Attorney’s Office to develop policies and procedures for law enforcement’s use of AI, this course ensures that officers remain in full control of their reports, using AI as an enhancement rather than a replacement for critical thinking and investigative documentation. AI tools assist with transcription, formatting, and language suggestions, yet officers must still apply human judgment to ensure accuracy, thoroughness, and fairness.
Students will engage in scenario-based exercises to evaluate AI-generated reports, identifying potential errors, omissions, and biases. They will explore how AI hallucinations can lead to incorrect assumptions and why ethical oversight is crucial in AI-assisted report writing. Through practical exercises, officers will compare AI-generated narratives with traditional human-written reports, learning to recognize strengths and weaknesses in both.
This course also prepares officers for courtroom testimony, providing them with the tools to explain and defend AI-assisted reports under cross-examination. Students will participate in mock trial scenarios, responding to defense challenges about AI reliability, factual integrity, and procedural transparency. Those completing this course will leave with the confidence to leverage AI effectively while consistently ensuring full compliance with legal and ethical standards.
By combining instructor-led discussions, real-world applications, and a course exam, this training ensures that students will adhere to all legal standards, uphold public trust, and adapt responsibly to the future of AI in policing.
